Police arrest 12 for DUI

During the week of Nov. 20-26, Hawaii Island police arrested 12 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision. None were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, five; Hilo, four; Puna, two; and North Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 853 DUI arrests compared to 891 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.3%.

There were 763 major collisions so far this year compared to 754 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.2%.

There have been 16 official traffic fatalities so far this year, compared to 32 fatalities for the same time last year, a decrease of 50%.

There has been one vehicular fatality this year that isn’t counted as an official traffic fatality because it wasn’t on a public roadway.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
